Understanding Test Sockets
The Backbone of Product Inspection
Test sockets are IC sockets for product inspection and are used to mount ICs on inspection equipment.
Testing involves examining the electrical characteristics of semiconductors to check for functionality and defects in the final products.
Test sockets incorporate probes and cantilever-type contacts for function and validation testing on semiconductors. MiniATE Systems provide the most suitable test sockets by making full use of our design and manufacturing know-how and integrated in-house production from the design to manufacturing of major components and product assembly.

Fastlock Test Socket
The SMT socket uses the same footprint as your chip. Socket is simply placed and reflowed onto the PCB in the same way as the chip and it only requires a small amount of additional board space. SMT type sockets are available with all retention systems.
Screwlock Test Socket
The SMT socket uses the same footprint as your chip. Socket is simply placed and reflowed onto the PCB in the same way as the chip and it only requires a small amount of additional board space. SMT type sockets are available with all retention systems.
Spring Lock Test Socket
The SMT socket uses the same footprint as your chip. Socket is simply placed and reflowed onto the PCB in the same way as the chip and it only requires a small amount of additional board space.
SMT type sockets are available with all retention systems.
Common Questions About Test Sockets
Explore answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our test sockets, designed to assist you in making informed decisions.
What is a test socket?
A test socket is a specialized device used to hold integrated circuits (ICs) in place during testing procedures. It provides electrical connections between the IC and testing equipment, enabling the evaluation of the IC’s performance and reliability.
What types of test sockets are available?
Consider the type of IC, the testing environment, and the specific requirements of your inspection process to select the appropriate test socket.
How do I choose the right test socket?
Choosing the right test socket involves considering factors such as:
- The specific package type of the IC.
- Pin count and pitch.
- Operating conditions (e.g., temperature, frequency).
- Compatibility with testing equipment.
Can test sockets accommodate high-frequency signals?
Yes, many test sockets are engineered to handle high-frequency signals, making them suitable for advanced semiconductor testing applications.
What material is used for test sockets?
Thermoplastic materials for semiconductor sockets are selected based on a variety of factors. Factors include temperature range, dimensional stability, micro machinability and relative cost. These and other factors need to be considered with the selection of material to produce a test socket. There are many options available, including PEEK, PEI, PPS, ceramic filled PEEK, and Polyimide. For temperatures at -40oC to about 170oC PEI and to about 220°C PPS would be suitable. At higher temperatures, PEEK and PI would be a better option.
I would like to consider MiniATE’s test socket. What kind of information do I need to provide ?
